Description

Samsung Galaxy S22 5G

Unboxing

First, what do you get bundled in the Samsung Galaxy s22 5G box? You get one Galaxy s22 Plus 5G, one type C to type C USB cable, and one SIM ejector tool. This is a Single SIM (Nano-SIM) or Dual SIM (2 Nano-SIMs + eSIM, dual stand-by) smartphone. The 45W charging adapter, as we all know by now, is sold separately. Could you be sure to include one with this purchase? Other than these, the only thing I have is paperwork.

Design

Samsung hasn’t changed up the design too much for the s22 generation. At least aesthetically, from a glance, you’d easily mistake this phone for the Galaxy S21, also 5G. Perhaps the flatter edges on this one might be considered one of the give-aways. And it also comes in a slightly different range of colors as well. Phantom Black, White, Pink Gold, Green, Graphite, Sky Blue, Violet, and Cream.

However, while it may look the same, the materials used here are quite a highlight. Samsung has changed quite considerably. You now have Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the back and front end, giving it a premium feel more than previous generations. Samsung has also added an Armour aluminum frame with more brutal drop and scratch resistance (advertised). Also, the s22 5G is IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 mins). Besides this, you have a similar-looking camera module in the top corner.

Performance

The entire Samsung Galaxy s22 family is powered by a new chipset in the Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (4 nm). Other regions (outside the US) have the Exynos 2200 (4 nm). And Samsung is making big, bold claims regarding the chipsets here. You’ve got all kinds of crazy graphical features packed in here. The Galaxy S22 5G should undoubtedly satisfy you if you are a gamer.

And, of course, this phone also gives you a good bit of 5G support. You’ve got Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6e support on there as well. You’ll find the storage under the battery and device care section of the settings of Samsung Galaxy s22 Plus 5G. The phone offers 128GB 8GB RAM or 256GB 8GB RAM.

Platform

What you have running the Samsung Galaxy s22 5G is Android 12 and One UI 4.1 launcher. One UI brings the best of Android 12 here. For instance, the privacy features are present and correct. You can fast toggle the camera and microphone access for all apps. And when you load up an app that uses the camera or the mic, you’ll get a little indicator at the top corner. You’ve got great customization in one UI. For example, you change the wallpaper and everything as usual, but you’ll also see the new color palette option as well. This can change the theme and colors based on the wallpaper you’ve installed at the time.

Cameras

For the cameras, what you’ve got on the Samsung Galaxy s22 5G is an improved, upgraded 50 MP, f/1.8, 24mm (wide), 1/1.56″, 1.0µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS primary shooter. It’s good to see that OIS built an improvement in the hardware. One of its strengths is when taking photos in low light. Portrait mode works better with pets now as well. What Samsung claims is that this phone’s portrait mode can even distinguish hair(s) and apply that blur effect. Bold claim! The selfie is a 10 MP, f/2.2, 26mm (wide), 1/3.24″, 1.22µm, Dual Pixel PDAF shooter. Its results are reasonably natural skin tones and plenty of crisp detail.

Present also on this S22 5G phone is a 12 MP, f/2.2, 13mm, 120˚ (ultrawide), 1/2.55″ 1.4µm, Super Steady video shooter. This one does have somewhat of an impact on the natural tones that you get from that primary sensor. And last up, there’s a 10 MP, f/2.4, 70mm (telephoto), 1/3.94″, 1.0µm, PDAF, OIS, 3x optical zoom shooter. It has 3X optical zoom and built-in visual image stabilization. So, if you want to get closer to your subject, this will do the job.
